You'll excuse us if we're cynical, but this does not make most gun owners terribly eager to trust Democrats to protect our gun rights:

Kevin,
I think you're missing the point of the caucus, which is to demonstrate to the party leadership the large number of pro-2nd Amendment Democrats and to promote our views within the party. Are our views supported throughout the party? No, but they are much more widely supported than stereotypes would recognize. Political parties by their very nature are formed by coalitions of people who don't agree on everything. This is why the GOC-DPO exists: to promote our ideas from within the party. The GOC-DPO mission is to see that gun owners get a seat at the table in DPO policy debates; and we are doing that quite successfully.

Concerning your cynicism, 2 of the 3 supposed "front-running" Republicans for president in '08--Giuliani and Romney--have the biggest history of supporting 2nd Amendment abuse of anyone running. I know that as a leading advocate of 2nd Amendment rights in Oregon that you are quite familiar with the the statements and history of those two men. Does the success of Giuliani or Romney mean Republican voters are anti-2nd Amendment? I don't think so, but it makes me nervous about the lack of 2nd Amendment support in that party as well. We'll have to see what happens in the campaigns.

In the meantime, we'll be hear working for change in our own house.

Zak, point well taken. If my post gave the impression that I believe that Republicans can be trusted to protect my gun rights any more than Dems can, simply because they are Republicans, I can assure you, that was not my intent.

In fact, I hope that OFF has made it clear that we are well aware that Republicans are in no way a sure protector of gun rights. In addition to the examples you gave, I could give you plenty closer to home.

Just so you know, I am not a Republican. And as a New Yorker, I have plenty of first hand experience with Republicans who can't wait to sell out gun owners.

I should have worded my post differently.

Wow, that document was typical "progressive" BS about "supporting the 2A" through more gun control. They managed to hit all the major gun control agenda items: "assault weapon" ban, "closing the gun show loophole," framing "legitimate gun use" as being limited to hunting. And then redefining all of this as gun "safety" because gun "control" doesn't poll well. Astounding. These idiots just don't get it. While I think the Blue Steel guys are the real deal and do actually support gun rights, I think they have a long hard row to hoe. The multitude of anti-gun and anti-gunowner comments at Blue Oregon speak volumes.
