Gun Owners Caucus on BlueOregon.com

A guest column I wrote about the Gun Owners Caucus of the DPO for BlueOregon.com, one of the leading liberal blog forums in Oregon has generated a wide range of feedback worth looking at. Here's the link: http://www.blueoregon.com/2006/09/democrats_and_t.html

The most gratifying result of all the feedback was that in the first two days and 30+ comments from people with views from across the political spectrum, not one commentator challenged my assertions that: "The Bush administration daily violates the 1st, 4th, and 5th amendments (unless you consider confessions under torture not to be self-incrimination). Tom Delay's cronies continue to violate the 13th amendment in the U.S. Mariannas."

I think the silence about THAT speaks volumes about our current political crisis.

I posted this over at the Blue Oregon entry you linked to. I thought you might want to read it. I've never voted for a Republican in my life, but I don't think I can vote for Dems any more either. Here's why:

Truly amazing. I expressed support for the gun owners caucus in my first post here, but I am now 100% convinced that Dems will never get their heads out when it comes to the gun issue. It will be nothing but platitudes about how they support the Second Amendment while they do everything they can to undermine it. I just heard Blue Oregon's Kari Chisholm on Air America talking about the gun owners caucus. His honesty was refreshing. He basically admitted straight out that the gun owners caucus was little more than a way for Dems to spin the gun issue, to try to dupe gun owners into believing that Dems supported the 2A. He said the Dems' strategy was to focus on hunters' gun rights but to still try to ban ban ban those evil ugly guns, er, "assault weapons," and "cop killer" bullets (i.e., any bullets any gun grabber wants to ban). Straight from the Brady Ban-Them-All playbook. Very nice. Y'all almost tricked me. Thanks to his refreshing honesty, I will continue to see the Democratic Party as the anti-Second Amendment party. And I don't vote for people who try to undermine my civil liberties.

Thanks Kari for clearing that up for me.

I thank Kari Chisholm for giving the Gun Owners Caucus a chance to use the BlueOregon.com forum. Howeve, anything Kari Chisholm has said about the GOC was said on behalf of himself, not the caucus. He's not a member. I haven't heard the comments, so I can't comment further.

However, let me be clear that the Gun Owners Caucus is NOT a window-dressing caucus. We support gun owners rights to keep and bear arms. Period. The Constitution doesn't say anything the right to "keep and bear sporting goods," as some have noted and that's not what we're defending.

The problem with outlawing "assault rifles" is that there is no clear definition (the term itself is meaningless, perhaps synonymous with "scary looking), criminals almost never use them, and they aren't nearly as lethal as the high powered hunting rifles and big game shotguns that are found in nearly 1/2 of American households. "Assault weapons" and the hysteria surrounding them is a media construct.

I'll try see what was said. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention, orygunner. I would never support a group whose purpose was "spinning the gun issue". I'm a firm supporter of Second Ammendment Rights, along with Zak who founded this group. Kari doesn't seem to be a member of the GOC and does not speak for its members in general or me in particular.
